In any moment of leadership, you have three choices:

  • Mandate – you decide
  • Moderate – you guide a group towards consensus
  • Delegate – you take yourself out of the picture and trust those you’re leading

You get to choose from these options when leading as a parent, leading as a manager, leading a group of peers, leading a jury, leading in a crisis situation, etc. The three choices stay the same.

There might be more than one effective choice in any situation. But there’s only one best choice, and great leaders have proven an intuition regarding which one to choose.
